Hi guys, thanks for taking the time to read my article on how to write a hit song. I know how frustrating this can be trying to find solid songwriting advice, so I’m glad you found me…here it is…
So, what can make a song into a hit?A lot of songwriting books just instruct you to ‘write with your feelings’ but we all know that’s not enough, we want to know exactly how to write a hit song! What’s more, how do we write a tune that’s good enough to eventually become a hit song? It’s so hard to find quality advice to show you exactly what you need to do to help guarantee your songwriting success. So…now on to the good part, my method on how to write a hit song?
My method is most effective when you approach it from these two angles To start with, I’ll make as many song ideas as I can. I won’t be starting out with the goal of writing one song, I’ll be pushing for ten or even twenty or thirty. I don’t mean completed songs either, I’ll be mainly turning out little song nuggets left, right and centre. A bridge here, a vocal hook there, a few choruses, maybe just a cool chord sequence or two..Lyrically just go with whatever comes out of your head at this point, you definitely don’t want to worry about making them perfect yet. Record all your ideas down in as easy and simplistic way as possible, then put them in a safe place. After you’ve finished your idea session you should have a huge stack of song nuggets you can draw from for your song. It’ll be a huge mix of stuff from silly little ideas you’d never use to genuine quality ideas.
Next, I’ll come back to my pile of ideas at a later time, whether it’s a day later or a month and spend some time sifting through them. This is where I’ll critique them and decide what’s usable and what isn’t. This is all about judging your ideas, going through them one by one and seeing which ones could work and which one’s won’t. Then once you have something you like, try working on the lyrics. Say I improvised a line the week before that said ‘Just keep on sinking down…’ I’d then sit down with a pad of paper and brainstorm some themes that phrase could be related to. This is the point where you can write with your emotions and put that lyrical depth into your song. Then once you have your theme, again brainstorm words, lyrics and phrases that relate to it.
The last part is again take some time away from your ideas, then come back and try and fuse your lyrical ideas with your musical ideas. The idea here is to keep pressing forward with your ideas and to not be overly critical too early. You must keep your creativity flowing by generating as many ideas as you can, this way it will only a matter of time before you write that hit song you’ve been trying to write for years! So ladies and gentlemen that’s it, you’ve just learned how to write a hit song!
